For Special Needs Parents In Our Platform, Please Find This Question Which Was Directed To Us Helpful For Your Child's Developmental Goals. 👇 With “stay and shelter” directives, and cancellations and closures of schools and events, should individuals with a Special Needs still go to work/school/day program and other activities? Going to work, school, day programs or other group activities will likely put individuals with Special Needs at greater risk for getting infected with COVID-19, and if there are other medical issues, it may raise the risk for severe complications. Localities are increasingly asking places where people congregate to close or restrict entry. Some businesses have limited operations this period and some are remaining open but with stringent rules and regulations. If your child or adult with special needs is employed at a business that is opened, you and the employer should confer about risk for infection and susceptibility and then decide whether it is advisable to continue going to work. Schools are currently temporarily closed across Nigeria. When they open, you should have a conversation with school officials teachers about risk for infection and susceptibility that will help you decide on when your child can return to school. In the case of day programs, the agency involved should be doing a risk assessment and may decide to close for a period or stay open after introducing infection control and surveillance for symptoms of infection. Confer with the manager at the agency for what safety procedures they have instituted and check as to what safety procedures they have put in place for transport and other Logistics Operations (drivers’ training, disinfectants for the busses or vans, seat spacing, etc.) to help decide participation of your child or young adult. In either situation, if individuals with special needs children or young adults end up at home, try to engage them in some of the activities that are similar to a work, school or day program environment. Creating a reliable, consistent new schedule may also be beneficial. .. We hope this helps!

The theme for World Happiness Day 2020 is all about being "happier together". The theme mainly focuses on what we have in common instead of focusing on the things that divide us. As we are facing a global crisis together, it is the time to keep calm, stay wise and be kind. The inalienable right is the pursuit of Happiness. It is rightly said that happiness is the reaction when you give someone a gift they've always wanted. There is a day that is celebrated to recognise people the importance of happiness in life. Work for others' happiness and find out the ways to make people happy. Discrimination is often very subtle and there seems to be great divergence when it comes to intention and perception. This however does not justifies it in any way! Discrimination and stigma linked to a disease is extremely dangerous and can pose a real public health challenge. It can drive people to hide the illness or symptoms, not seek health care and discourage them from adopting preventive behaviours. In the case of the coronavirus social media has not only propagated doubtful rumours on the emergence of the virus, but also has brought forth absurd methods for prevention. It must be noted that not only infectious diseases like Corona are linked to discrimination and prejudice. For many patients with genetic and chronic disease being labelled, stereotyped and separated has become daily routine. While this discrimination is most apparent in individual social interactions in the form of avoidance and abuse, it also operates on an institutional and structural level. For example, having a certain condition can affect a patient’s access to public services like education, healthcare and employment. For instance, persons with special needs still face difficulties when it comes to the reintegration into the working world. Also, patients with HIV, depressions and anxiety disorders as well as with dermatologic conditions are affected on multiple levels. Facts and scientifically validated information should serve as antidote for the spread of misinformation and consequently discrimination. It must be the highest priority and responsibility of both state media (TV, radio, websites, newspapers etc.) and politicians to provide objective data and not stir mass panic with dramatic headlines. Guidance to actions should be provided and the spread of fake news should be controlled. As we commence our economic activities in Lagos State Nigeria, let us adhere to all safety measures and shun news that will create panic and worry. Have a fulfilled week!
