It’s FINALLY here!!!!! Gyms are opening up next week and I am MORE than excited to get my physical activity back on track. There is only so much running and garage workouts this girl can do. I need my people and trainer to get my a$$ back in check. However, I also need to keep my mind in check. I am going to be weaker and not going to be able to handle the weight levels I was before Covid or the strength and speed of rowing or burpees. Gonna take time to get back in and paying attention to your body is the MOST important. Start off slow and comfortable. You don’t want to injure yourself in the first week and then be out all over again to heal an injury. Work your way into it and listen to your body. The speed and strength WILL come. Be patient. Self care is important. Massage has many benefits and goes hand in hand with your athletic wants and needs. I’m here taking care of you as well as having a therapist take care of me. I’m no good to you if I’m injured either. Patience y’all. We’ve made it this far so be patient with your body. I can do hard things!!! When all of my #carmelmarathon training seemed to be for nothing, I felt kind of hollow. Like I needed something, a challenge of some sort. That’s when I discovered the #yetiultra24hourchallenge !! I asked my equally crazy friend, @mel.anne1230 to join me, and of course she said yes! We did every single run outside and had perfect weather! Leg five sucked, but, it all was such a great experience. Made plans to do it again, next year! I've been in such detraining mode lately I knew I was running less and I DID need a break. Nonetheless, I forgot how much of an impact it would have on my fitness. My VO2 max dropped 5 points!!! I guess it just reminds me that all the longer running, speed, and hill workouts do add up to something. I am going to have to get over my mental funk and start training again. Even though my race is April 3rd, 2021. I really should keep building on the fitness I had/have. It was awesome to get the chance to meet (at a safe social distance!) with one of our running groups tonight. I took Justin on the alternate route he had not run before and it was great weather! Satisfied? That can mean so many different things...when it comes to eating it has to do with feeling like you've eaten the right amount, not too much, not too little. Did you know research has shown that eggs and potatoes are two of the highest satiety foods you can eat for breakfast? The higher the satiety in a meal the longer you can go before you are hungry again. Donut... Low satiety. Not many people have time to cook up a bunch of potatoes in the morning but this is where leftovers come in! This was the perfect breakfast after a great run. Seriously, I felt like flying today. My first virtual race and I chose the @500festival #indymini to run this morning! Certainly not a PR, but with traffic stops & some fierce head wind in the last half, I’ll take this time! Forgot my homemade bib but I did have some of my Indy mini medals waiting at the virtual finish line! I thought I might have a little pop in my step still. Haven’t ran this far, this fast for a mile, or had that high of a heart rate for nearly 3 years! It’s been a rough couple years with calf and hamstring issues, but this virtual @500festival mini result was worth the wait! Now time to celebrate!

Six Tips for Your Virtual Race ⁣ 1. Determine your course before you head out the door. Several questions to ask yourself may determine one route over another. Are you going to run an out and back, a loop, multiple loops, will there be hills, lots of intersections, drinking fountains, or restrooms? ⁣ ⁣ 2. Plan your nutrition! With no aid stations you should decide what drink or supplements? How much will you need? Can you carry it all? With those in mind you need to add multiple loops to your course to refuel for longer distance/duration races.⁣ ⁣ 3. Prepare to stop. With virtual racing the chances of having to stop are high unless you are running on a treadmill or track. Understand that you are not cheating or failing because of stopping at intersections or other unforgettable obstacles. Be safe out there!⁣ ⁣ 4. Set realistic expectations. Due to the lack of closed course, no nutrition stations, race pacers, and other factors it would be in your best interest to dial back expectations. Maybe you will run a personal best or run the entire race, but for time goals I suggest adding 3-5% to your time goal. There is a lot to be said for race day adrenaline and maintaining momentum through intersections.⁣ ⁣ 5. Notify someone that you are going to be completing a virtual race. Safety is key, but also by telling someone you are racing adds an extra layer of accountability!⁣ ⁣ 6. Enjoy the race! All the hard work and weeks of training have come to an end and this is the time to celebrate!⁣ ⁣ Good luck!
